What SuperCIC is trying to do
The SuperCIC approach uses a small microcontroller (commonly a PIC16F630-class part in community designs) to handle CIC handshake behavior across regions and often to support 50/60 Hz switching. It is popular because original region lock behavior is crude by modern standards — which is exactly why people underestimate the mechanical risk.
How these installs usually fail
- Excess heat on thin SNES pads
- Using a dull iron tip and dwelling too long
- Pulling on wires before solder has solidified
- Skipping flux and fighting oxidized joints
- Copying a pinout for the wrong board revision
Safer workflow
- Confirm board revision and photo-document stock CIC area
- Practice the solder joints on a scrap board first
- Use fine tip, quality flux, and strain relief on every wire
- Test continuity before reassembly — not after the shell is screwed down
- If pads lift, stop and reassess; powering through is how multi-net damage spreads
