Region-free SNES is a reasonable goal. Lifting pads off the CIC area while chasing that goal is how a “simple mod” becomes a multi-hour reconstruction.

Hackaday’s write-up of a botched SuperCIC install (and the recovery path that followed) is a useful cautionary tale for anyone wiring a PIC into a Super Nintendo.

What SuperCIC is trying to do

The SuperCIC approach uses a small microcontroller (commonly a PIC16F630-class part in community designs) to handle CIC handshake behavior across regions and often to support 50/60 Hz switching. It is popular because original region lock behavior is crude by modern standards — which is exactly why people underestimate the mechanical risk.

How these installs usually fail
  • Excess heat on thin SNES pads
  • Using a dull iron tip and dwelling too long
  • Pulling on wires before solder has solidified
  • Skipping flux and fighting oxidized joints
  • Copying a pinout for the wrong board revision
Once CIC pads are gone, you are not “almost done.” You are in trace repair territory: enamel wire, via reconstruction, or completing the mod in a way that no longer relies on destroyed pads.

Safer workflow
  1. Confirm board revision and photo-document stock CIC area
  2. Practice the solder joints on a scrap board first
  3. Use fine tip, quality flux, and strain relief on every wire
  4. Test continuity before reassembly — not after the shell is screwed down
  5. If pads lift, stop and reassess; powering through is how multi-net damage spreads
