What leaking capacitors actually do
- Corrode pads and fine traces
- Raise ESR until rails collapse under load
- Damage nearby magnetics and passives (including small transformers/inverters in LCD bias supplies)
- Create intermittent faults that look like “bad chips”
- Document and photograph before any desolder
- Remove obvious leaks and neutralize residue carefully
- Replace the full capacitor set in the affected domain, not only the one that vented
- Verify secondary damage (coils, transformers, flex cables, fuseables)
- Bring up on current-limited supply when possible
- Only then chase image quality and mechanical reassembly
Sometimes an original bias inverter subassembly is unobtainium. Using a modern module that produces the needed rail is not “impure” — it is how rare machines keep existing. Document the change so the next technician is not surprised.
